Design is my passion. Whether it be graphic design, fashion design or interior design, all aspects of this field intrigue and inspire me. From a very early age I found myself drawn to designer clothing and fashion. I was constantly flipping through fashion magazines to see the newest trends. My interest in design flourished over the years into interior design and graphic design. The more research and work I did in the field of interior design, the stronger my passion grew and continues to grow. The interior design program at Kwantlen University College has opened my eyes to the world of design. I find myself completely enthralled by the potential for design and am thrilled to be a part of that environment. The level of education that Kwantlen prides itself on providing is second to none. The projects that I have done as part of my course have taught me the fundamental principles and elements of design and have helped me establish a design process that works for me. The combination of technical training coupled with theoretical knowledge of design history, as well as practical experience has given me a complete picture of interior design. During my four years at Kwantlen University College I have had the opportunity to work individually and within groups to create successful design solutions to an array of problems. For my senior thesis project, I designed a healthcare facility that integrated three complimentary services (clinic, pharmacy, and laboratory testing) into one facility. The project consisted of approximately 27,000 square feet on two levels. Other projects included in my portfolio are brief overviews into my solutions for an urban live/work loft apartment, a mobile spa RV unit, a universally designed apartment, as well as a graphic design solution for an opera poster that was meant to appeal to a younger audience. Also included is a storyboard project that highlights the history and evolution of Islamic Art and Architecture. The challenge presented to us was to design a visual way to educate others on the history of Islamic Architecture and do so in a format that was succinct and synthesized. We designed a storyboard that was based around the Islamic rosette and included 8 panels with doors that opened to reveal information on different aspects of Islamic Art and Architecture. Not only did this project teach me an incredible lesson in Islamic history, it was also selected to be featured at a research and design conference in Vancouver, BC. With my degree in hand, I am excited to begin my career in interior design. I look forward to finding the firm that I can be of value to the most. I hope to combine my skills and fresh thinking with their expertise and experience. Together we can create design solutions that will enhance the quality of life for those who use the built environment. |
